The difference between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel

The main differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel are composition, corrosion resistance, application areas, and price

  1. Composition: 304 stainless steel contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel, while 316 stainless steel also adds 2-3% molybdenum and a small amount of titanium on this basis.

  2. Corrosion resistance: 316 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance due to the addition of molybdenum, especially more durable for seawater and salt corrosion environments. Meanwhile, 316 stainless steel has excellent high temperature resistance and is suitable for applications in high-temperature environments. In contrast, 304 stainless steel has relatively poor durability in high temperature and salt corrosion environments.

  3. Application areas: 304 stainless steel is widely used in industries such as construction, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles due to its excellent corrosion resistance and processing performance. In fields such as marine engineering, chemical engineering, petroleum and natural gas industries, as well as food processing equipment, medical devices and other places with high hygiene requirements, 316 stainless steel is more preferred to be used.

  4. Price: The price of 304 stainless steel is relatively low, while the price of 316 stainless steel is higher.

In summary, there are significant differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel in terms of composition, corrosion resistance, application areas, and price. The choice of stainless steel depends on the specific application requirements.
